Tamilnadu forerunner in Water Quality

Recently we received the results of the 3rd round of the Analytical Quality Control Exercise (AQC). In this exercise, intended for all laboratories of the Central and State agencies participating in the Hydrology Project, 38 laboratories took part to analyse eight parameters. The laboratories of the Tamil Nadu State Ground and Surface Water Resources Data Centre (Public Works Department) in Chennai and Trichy secured the first place by analysing

all the parameters correctly. This is perhaps not totally surprising because both laboratories often engage themselves in extra-curricular projects, just to try and learn new things.

Water quality also featured high during the Groundwater Awareness Programmes held on eleven different locations in the state. The objective of the campaign is to educate the public in general and farmers in particular about the dire need and importance of judicious use of groundwater. During these campaigns the general public was offered free testing of their water samples. The overwhelming response to this offer indicates the importance of water quality to all parties involved. Similar activities should be developed by other agencies.

The fourth round of Analytical Quality Control has already started. As submission of the results is due on 24th September we will be able to announce the results in the next HP newsletter.
